The Antarctic Conservation Blog of London's Natural History Museum posted this extraordinary image of the first hints of a returning sun at the frozen Scott Base camp at the bottom of the world. The researchers here are painstakingly working to conserve artifacts from the explorer's hut left by the 1908 expedition of Ernest Shackleton. Check out another blog post here that documents the ritual plunge - sans clothing, no less - into the Antarctic Ocean that these hardy souls and their American neighbors from McMurdo took through a hole hewn in the ice with chainsaws earlier this month! Hats off to young blood: I doubt my heart could have taken it. Then again, we did have a Titanic survivor in the family - Archibald Gracie- and he had to swim for it...
