Have you talked to the local library about inter library loan of the NYT en microfiche or whatever? Also try the nearby state college libraries. You may not be able to borrow but you should be able to read in house. If nothing else that would show which articles, if any, are worth buying.
Any academic papers on the topic moldering away?
