Spot on, David! This is indeed the one-armed, former Confederate general in the service of the Khedive of Egypt, taken before he was cashiered for his involvement in a shooting in the streets of Alexandria (not the suburb of D.C.) in which the nephew of Ben Butler was an antagonist.
