Today is the anniversay of the Morro Castle disaster, a tragic ship fire of the coast of New Jersey in 1934. I probably won't mention this fact this evening when I toast the bride and groom at my old friend Charlie Crystle's wedding down at the shore. I did blog at some length on the subject last year, and that post gets daily hits from people with an interest in this shipwreck. The picture at left is of the charred hulk of the Morro Castle ashore at Asbury Park.

Ah, yes, betraying my New England roots. We go down Cape and up Cape and down to the Cape and don't understand why anyone would go somewhere else looking for sand. Our loss. Had a glorious weekend, capped off by seeing you and your great family. Here's to more of that!

"down at the shore"?
In New Jersey, we say "down the shore". Nobody says "at" with respect to the shore.
Just saying.
Great seeing you today, by the way!

Already had a couple of those moments at the poker party crabfest last night...
"May the fire of your love last longer than the inferno that left the Morro Castle a smoking hulk on this date in 1934."
Yeah, that's much better than that Leaves of Grass excerpt I thought I'd lay on them.

AW, mention it during the toast! It'll make for one of those amazingly awkward momets that will give people something to talk about for days.. :)
