Kris, how thrilling and terrifying! You were very fortunate to get such a good look at the animal and that someone stopped to help you away from the area. Since it is raining, there will doubtless be little biological evidence at the site of your encounter, but MA DFW may still be interested. I am not surprised that the local PD are willing to say that there are lions here: they get too many reports from folks they know and trust to discount them out of hand.

Today while running in Great Barrington, MA, I spotted a mountain lion hanging out in a meadow adjacent to a great wood. This was no bobcat: it was huge -- and gazing at me. I had the good fortune to flag down a passing car a few moments later (being from CA, I am wary of any big-cat-while-running encounters). The good folks in the car stopped and gave me a lift home. When I called the local PD, a cop told me that the lions are, indeed, here.
